Election Results - Part 1

2008 Election Review

The Election is over and the worst has happened. The Republicans got what they deserved. John McCain’s campaign was run by boobs. The Obama campaign was very good and they benefitted from every media outlet not named Fox News having a collective thrill run up their legs at the idea of Sen. Obama being elected. And all of this coalesced at just the wrong moment in time leading to a tidal wave of voters dissatisfied with the way things turning to the Democrats. So it’s time for an election recap and then I’ll move on to using this space for discussing ideas for the future.

Unfortunately as I started writing this article it ran on and on and on… So I will break this up and post it in three or four installments.

Looking back at the 2008 elections it is obvious that the Republicans got what they deserved. During the 80’s and 90’s the Republicans were the party of ideas and the Democrats were intellectually bankrupt and rudderless. That culminated in the House Republicans adopting the “Contract with America” and sweeping into the Majority in 1994 for the first time in eons. After that Election, the House Republicans moved quickly to enact a number of reforms in both the political process and the government.

But it was downhill from there. Over the last 8 years particularly, Republicans in Congress stopped generating new ideas and initiatives and instead focused on staying in office. They started promoting pork barrel spending and perks rather than principles and beliefs. The number of Republican elected officials caught up in scandals over the last 8 years is disgraceful.

It is sad because there are (were might be a better word after this election) some outstanding Republican elected officials. But they were not in the leadership. Unfortunately the House and Senate leaders collaborated with the Bush Administration over the last four years to create a total disaster for the Republican Party. The first two years of President Bush’s second term led to a mid-term election where the Republicans lost control of both the House and the Senate for the first time in many years. Then they outdid themselves over the last two years, accomplishing nothing that would cause voters to want to consider not giving the Democrats total control of the U.S. Government.

It is truly scary that, depending on how the last few Senate races play out the Democrats may have 60 or more Senators, which would mean the Republicans cannot stop any Obama legislation, Court Nominees, or anything else by filibustering.

Til next time, be well.
