A President Donald Trump Classic!

This is a story that came to a head last week.

Previous to last week, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), a quasi-federal Agency, fired approximately 200 tech workers - American workers - and, it is reported that they forced those people to train their replacements, all of whom work for foreign based companies and many of whom were coming to the US to work on H1-B visas.

Here's what happened last week:

Monday: President Donald Trump meets with representatives of the tech workers in the White House to hear first hand what happened to them

President Trump immediately fires Skip Thompson, the Chairman of the Board of the TVA.  Thompson was a Trump appointee.  Didn't matter.  "You're fired" in classic Donald Trump/Apprentice fashion.

President Trump then says:

“So, let this serve as a warning to any federally appointed board. If you betray American workers, then you will hear two simple words: You’re fired. If the TVA does not move swiftly to reverse their decision to rehire their workers, then more board members will be removed.”

President Trump fired one more Board member and he called for the CEO to be fired. The tech workers are being offered their jobs back.

Time lapse between when the President met with the workers and when the decision was reversed?  Three days.

This is called "Trump Time."  In Trump Time, things that take forever happen in the proverbial New York Minute.

Classic quotes after the dust settled:

  • The TVA's new interim Chairman of the Board called the decision to fire the tech workers "a faulty choice."
  • The TVA CEO says they were wrong to fire those workers during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Trump is still after the CEO of the TVA.  The TVA is a quasi-federal government agency, which means the CEO is a federal employee.  The TVA CEO makes $8 million a year.  Trump feels that salary should be $500,000 not $8 million.  The President has some other axes to grind with the CEO.  That story is not yet over.

Another outcome of this was President Trump signed an Executive Order over the weekend requiring all Federal Agencies to hire Americans first.  Why that wasn't done by any previous Administration is remarkable.
